KIDNEY CARS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I go about donating a vehicle?

• The vehicle must be registered in your name.

• It has to be a complete vehicle, meaning that it has its motor, transmission, wheels, tires, and body parts.

• The agent will arrange for the pickup of your vehicle at no cost to you.  We will have you sign the title (under

signature of seller) and leave both the title and keys in the glove compartment with at least the passenger side

unlocked.  Please make all personal items are removed and that the vehicle is sitting in an area accessible for

   towing.

• Remove the license plates and turn them into DMV.

• No one has to be present for us to pick up your car, as long as the signed title and keys are in the glove

   compartment.

• Donations can be made by calling 1-888-KIDNEY8 or through our website.  Click here to donate a vehicle online.

What kind of tax credit will I receive?

You are allowed up to $500 on any donated vehicle.  If the car runs, the local Kidney Car agent may try to sell it for the Foundation.  In the event that the car does sell, by law the donor will be notified of the selling price within 30 days and would be able to write off the amount of the sale.

Does the car have to run?

No, but it must have all of its parts - tires, engine, transmission, etc.

What if the car is not registered in my name?

We require any donated vehicle to be registered in the donor's name.  If the car is not registered in the donor's name, the donor must get the car registered in his or her name before it can be donated.

What if I cannot find the title?

We will require that you have another title printed from the DMV.

How quickly can a car be picked up?

One or two business days, not including weekends.

What happens after I have donated the car?

You will be mailed a receipt within two days of the donation, or it will be given to you at the time of pick up.  That receipt will be used for a maximum $500 tax deduction for next year's taxes.

Is there anything I should do once my car has been donated?

You should cancel the car's insurance and also have the car removed from your name at both the DMV and where you pay your personal property taxes.

How will my donation benefit the National Kidney Foundation?

Proceeds from cars sold by our Kidney Car agents go toward kidney disease research.  If a car does not sell, it is then sold for its useable parts.  The agent will purchase the car from the Foundation for the amount we request.
